(4/6/09, Fairfax, VA) – In spite of the Obama administration's proactive support for abortion both nationally and internationally, Tepeyac Family Center, the Catholic pro-life OB-GYN practice in Fairfax, VA, achieved a milestone in March when its physicians delivered 73 babies. This eclipsed the previous record of 62 deliveries in December of 2005. The increase can be attributed to Tepeyac's ability to expand its services with the arrival of Drs. Miriam Pereira and Lorna Cvetkovich early last year. In 2008, Tepeyac physicians delivered 629 babies to their patients, surpassing the previous record of 586 in 2005. Tepeyac Family Center is a tax-exempt OB-GYN medical clinic and the only full-time operational Catholic healthcare facility in the Arlington Diocese.
"The numbers speak for themselves," said Bob Laird, the Practice Administrator at Tepeyac. "Children are often the energizing power within a family, and thus within society. Babies are a gift and a blessing; we are happy to see so many new patients come to us and experience medicine in a completely holistic setting, caring for not only the medical portion of a woman's health, but for her whole person," said Laird.
Dr. Marie Anderson, Medical Director at Tepeyac, was not surprised to see the numbers. "It's been an exhilarating month in the labor and delivery wing of Fair Oaks Hospital. I love delivering babies, and there are few opportunities in the life of a family to witness the birth of a new child. I feel privileged to be part of that."
Significant among the 629 babies delivered to patients in 2008 was the fact that 48 of them were referred by the Arlington Diocese Gabriel Project program, a parish-based program helping pregnant women in need. Another 52 women came from local crisis pregnancy centers.
At a time when the Obama administration is attempting to withdraw conscience protection rules for medical personnel, Tepeyac continues to grow, as evidenced by the 160% increase in patients over the previous year. Laird said, "We are the largest private practice admitting obstetrical patients at our local hospital, INOVA Fair Oaks. In short, our medical practice model is a success story in our area and one that provides valuable services to our patients and a fulfilling work environment in which our physicians can practice medicine. We expect to continue to see significant growth in the years ahead, as long as we can practice medicine in accordance with our consciences and the best science has to offer."
Tepeyac and DMC Pharmacy are part of the Divine Mercy Care umbrella of Catholic healthcare organizations in Northern Virginia, where patients and medical professionals alike can practice their faith without compromise. "Divine Mercy Care is values-based and consumer-driven. Neither patients nor professionals want to abandon their consciences while seeking or providing medical care," said Dr. John Bruchalski, the president and chairman of Divine Mercy Care. "In addition to practicing good medicine, we need to be professional, personal, and passionate about our respect for the sanctity of all human life."
